LANGUAGES

What’s a ‘minority’ language?

A minority language is a language:

  1. whose speakers are mostly bilingual in a dominant language
  2. and / or the usage of which does not reach all levels of society / everyday life

Are all ‘minority’ languages small?

No, not necessarily. Some of them are actually bigger than so-called ‘dominant languages’. For example, Bavarian has 14,000,000 speakers, many more than Danish, Swedish, Greek or Albanian.
